Communities Mental Wellness was born out of the need to be responsive to the promotion of literacy and evidence-based interventions for the mental wellbeing of children and their families and communities at large. Through life-course and rights-based approaches, Communities Mental Wellness champions for mental health prevention and promotion of children, adolescents, young and older adults. The organization allies multi-sectoral collaborations in the empowerment of persons with or at risk for mental health conditions.

Communities Mental Wellness (CMW) was founded in 2018 and officially registered in June 2021 as a non-profit organization in Kenya by the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government under Section 10 of the NGOs Coordination Act. CMW was born out of the need to be responsive to the promotion of literacy and evidence-based interventions for the mental wellbeing of children, their families, and communities. Through life-course and rights-based approaches, CMW champions mental health prevention and promotion of children, adolescents, and young and older adults. Position

CMW seeks committed, like-minded individuals to join its Board of Directors for a 3-years term. The Board will support the work of CMW and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. We are seeking to recruit six board members and expect that potential candidates will bring to CMW a range of skills, experience, and expertise that will drive its strategic plan to realization. We are looking for board members with extensive professional experience and significant executive leadership accomplishments in non-profits, business, philanthropy or related sectors.

Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

  • Leadership, governance and oversight
  • Passionate and enthusiastic about raising mental health awareness and promoting mental health services in the community
  • Programme development, especially in crafting sustainable solutions to enhance mental health awareness and promotion from the grassroots to county and national levels.
  • Resource mobilization from private foundations, companies, bilateral and multilateral donors
  • Marketing, communications and public relations
  • Policy influencing and lobbying at the senior level
  • Strategic planning and organizational development
  • Monitoring, evaluation and process improvements
  • Attend quarterly board meetings and any special(extra-ordinary) meetings as shall be called upon
  • Knowledge of mental health will be an added advantage

Time commitment

Board membership at CMW is voluntary and not set up as a permanent paid position.

Board members meet periodically (at least four times a year) but also participate in the organisation’s life between board meetings, advising the management team and acting in an ambassadorial role for CMW. The term for Board membership is for three years.
